Hitchcock is renowned for making good films, and although The Birds was made in 1963, and i'm not really a fan of older films, i'd say he did it again with this one. it was pretty quick moving, compared to a lot of other older films, which was good because to be honest that's what really puts me off watching them.
Tippi Hedren is the typical Hitchcock woman; beautiful yet completely capable. until the very end where she makes a stupid decision and has to be rescued by Mitch (Rod Taylor) who i found to be very 'handsome' which isn't an adjective i'd use very often. but he seemed a perfect gentleman, and had an adorable sister, although his mother was a bit weird. there was an adorable romantic connection between Melanie and Mitch, although i thought it seemed a bit odd that she'd travel so far to see him when she'd only met him for a few moments before, but he seemed to think it was romantic.
There were parts which were pretty gruesome; a few dead bodies and a car explosion, which made it a fair bit more interesting, and to be honest the whole story line was pretty plausible, although they never really explained properly why the birds had decided to attack everyone. in the short story it was based on, they claimed that the birds attacked because of cold winds stopping them from migrating, and they were hungry so they started to eat the people, which actually makes a bit of sense, as opposed to the film rendition which holds no sort of explanation as to why the birds were attacking, which i think is where this film falls. it doesn't make an awful lot of sense..
There have been rumours of a remake in 2013, so it'll be interesting to see if they do make one, if it'll be a cheap horror with even less plot line than the original, or if they'll make a potentially exciting and scary story into something worth watching.
of course, this is all just my opinion.. feel free to disagree...ܤ
