Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)

I love this film. maybe it's just because i've always loved Greek gods and legends, but Logan Lerman's adorable face doesn't hurt either. 

So it's basically about this boy - Percy Jackson - who is accused of stealing Zeus (Sean Bean)'s lightening bolt, and if he doesn't get it back there'll be a big war between the gods, which will tear up the earth and basically ruin everything. so the missing bolt leads to Percy's mother being stolen by Hades. so, Percy travels across America, led by a map given to him by Luke (Jake Abel), one of Percy's new demi-god friends with Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), his hilarious protector and best friend, and the mysterious yet very capable Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) who is set to be a love interest from the start, in order to get his mother back from hell, whilst tackling the many opponents trying to steal the lightening bolt from Percy, despite him persistently telling them that he doesn't have it.

I thought the ending especially was a high point, not because it was the end, but because of the unseen twists, and because although their journey was entertaining, the last fifteen minutes is where it all really kicked off, and everything added up. there were lots of clever links to actual Greek mythology, which is a plus, and although i don't know a lot about Greek mythology, so i can't tell if it was all entirely accurate, the fact that they put so much of it in, while still modernising it to fit in with the twenty first century was very clever, although i'm sure they had to use their creative licence to adapt some of the stories to fit with their tale.
So to conclude although the idea of having a summer camp type demi-god fortress somewhere in America is awesome, i am still slightly dubious about some of the Greek mythology but i don't think it would ruin the film for anyone except Greek mythology fanatics who knew the stories with great accuracy. the special effects were good, and although it wasn't all action all the time, i didn't find myself getting bored at any point, which is always a good thing. i think i'll probably watch it again at some point in the near future, even if it's just to marvel at the idea of it all, but probably mostly for the story, and despite knowing all the twists and turns i'm pretty sure i'll still enjoy it just as much as i did the first time.

Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night (2010)

i can imagine a few people really hating this film, because to be honest it wasn't exactly one that jumps out as being particularly fantastic, but personally, i found it brilliant and hilarious. although Dylan Dog is portrayed as a movie about this guy who solves supernatural crimes, and it's all scary and dangerous, i don't think they really took it too seriously when they made it; it's more just hilarious and a little bit quirky, and not at all scary, although bits of it did sort of remind me of Underworld. 

Although i did love Dylan (Brandon Routh), i think my favourite character has to be Marcus (Sam Huntington), who we watched struggling with learning to live with becoming a zombie and living off worms. he was absolutely adorable, and a perfect sidekick. Dylan was awesome too though, and although looking at pictures Brandon Routh doesn't seem particularly attractive, throughout the film he does seem to pull off some sort of charming handsomeness, which is always an important thing to think about when considering your main character.

the female eye-candy of the film was Elizabeth (Anita Briem) who i guess was supposed to be sort of kick ass, but also sort of a helpless heroine that Dylan needed to look after. to be honest, after a while she got a little bit annoying but she needed to be there to make the story work.

Overall i was pretty impressed with the whole thing, it had a weird sort of feel to it; like you were laughing along with the producers. although, i don't think i ever laughed out loud, it did make me smile a lot - it's just a simple, easy going movie with a little bit of humour and a little bit of horror. but not too much horror; i'd let my little sister watch it. in fact, i'm probably going to force her to watch it, because i know she'll enjoy it.

i love this film; i loved it the first time i saw it, and i've watched it about four times since then.

When In Rome (2010)

so i'd seen this film once before, and to be honest even though the trailer looked pretty terrible, i figured i'd try it - mostly because of Josh Duhamel's beautiful face, but also because i loved Kristen Bell ever since i first saw Veronica Mars. i mean, it's not like she's ever in the greatest movies, but i always enjoy them, once i accept that it's not going to be the best thing i've ever seen. and this one, although kind of ridiculous, and not something i would describe as 'hilariously funny' but it was quite sweet. and it's pretty easy to guess all the twists, so it's easy to watch if you just feel like relaxing and not working your brain too hard on complicated plot lines.

All the scenery and things when they were in Rome was so beautiful, and this film is the reason i want to visit Rome - not because i want to steal some coins and make strangers fall in love with me, but just because it looked so beautiful. all her 'stalkers' were kind of annoying, accept for 'Antonio Donatella' who i actually thought was really sweet. but the magician and the model were particularly annoying. i don't think it ruined the film too much, and i suppose that's kind of the point, but it just wasn't funny. there were a few bits though, that did make me laugh out loud. i think particularly when they were in the blackout restaurant, and the waitress was listening in to what they were saying. and of course every time Nick walked into something - but slapstick humour is something i almost always laugh at. 

It is a chick-flick without a doubt, but i still enjoyed it; not sure it's one of the ones i'll watch over and over, but it's nice to have it on my computer for when i'm tired and just want a happy feel-good girl film that i can hide in bed and eat ice cream with.
